Now that you are situated in your lodging, take advantage of the
vast number of historical sites throughout Ireland. Remember, if
you are with a car you can cover a large area. You can cross all
of Ireland from east to west in a few short hours. Visit
everything from ancient megalithic sites to castle ruins and
national parks.
I spent a couple years in Ireland before realizing this after a
friend with a car started a weekly Sunday ritual where he picked
me up around noon and we went on a 'Magical Mystery Tour' with
his GPS finding places to eat and visit. He was a native to
Ireland so he knew all the ins and outs. In the early evening,
we dropped the car off at his house and headed to our local pub.
Most visitors seem to overlook this but its a great way to spend
an afternoon before going back to your lodging and getting ready
for evenening entertainment.
Glendalough
A great place to spend an afternoon in County Wicklow. Lots of walking trails in the beautiful surroundings including a nearby lake. Explore or take guided tours of the Monastic City full of ruins, the iconic round tower from the dark ages where monks would flee from viking raids. Indoor/outdoor dining at the visitor center. Been there a few times and still haven't seen everything.
Newgrange
An interesting Neolithic Stone Age ceremonial monument with stone circles older than the pyramids and Stonehenge and before the Irish and Celtic peoples. Located on a ley line, many including myself sense a kind of mysterious energy at the site. Tour guides will take you down a deep shaft aligned perfectly with the Winter Solstice sunrise into a sacrificial chamber. The chamber is only illuminated for 14 minutes per year on the Winter Solstice sunrise on a clear day. People spend years on a waiting list for this event. About 45 minutes north of Dublin. If you are renting a car, add this to your navigator. Well worth it. Nice museum and gift shop.
