The more time I spent in Ireland the more I learned by word of mouth and personal experiences when it comes to taking trips when I had to use up vacation time. I often spent hours surfing hotel booking websites and about half the time the hotels didn't live up tp my expectations. Lessons learned, I realized you need to consider the totality of the hotel or other lodging. This includes location, amenities, quality of service, distance to public transport, quality of menu, after hours service, etc. I've been in big beautiful hotels at 200€ + per night and was less satisfied than in hotels going for 60€-100€ per night simply because of convenience of location to transport and distance to entertainment, menu quality. Traveling solo, that's important if for instance you like to explore local pubs for Guinness and only have a rental car. Although necessary sometimes, keep taxis to a minimum which can get expensive. You can easily spend 30€ each way just to spend a few hours at a pub. Save that for something else, you'll need it - Ireland has always been expensive compared to most places. So I put together a couple of my recommendations. If you have a positive experience you would like to share please zip your photos and upload to the site and have it added to the ones below. The objective is to help prospective travelers make better decisions in their long awaited trip and get the best experience.

Gleesons

A classy family owned establishment owned by three brothers. A one-stop-shop with hotel rooms, a specialty food store with deli and pastries and other sundries. A covered and heated terrace. Interesting floor layout with multiple rooms, each with its own character from bar areas with TV screens, to elegant dining room, a quiet central room with fireplace, and a separate billiard room. Great value compared to chain hotels.

Skeffington Arms 'The Skeff' Hotel

Impressive. Decked out in Victorian era style wood paneling and artwork, paintings, black marble columns, brass bar railing and more. There are multiple bar areas on several floors. Located on Galway's Eyre Square, a hotspot for live music and nightlife near the yacht marina which is the final destination for round the world yacht races. Tour buses minutes away to take you to the famous Cliffs of Moher. Great atmosphere if you don't prefer the hustle and bustle of Dublin but want the entertainment options. Great value compared to chain hotels.
